How, for instance, to deal with GenAI in education and design when the industry is already adopting this technology at a fast pace? Other dilemmas or crossroads are, for instance, the introduction of cheap manufacturing technologies (like 3D printing) and electronics (like Arduino), which lead to quick prototyping and learning but also to higher environmental pressure of disposables.

This conference will focus on these rapid developments, which often do not sync with the cumbersome process of changes in curricula, courses and our research. Are we still working in the front-end of innovation, or are commercial parties overtaking us?

Aims

The conference aims to:

Discuss innovative educational concepts and strategies to help staff, students, and graduates address current and future challenges in terms of engineering and design;

Identify potential tensions between the motivation of academia in training design and engineering graduates and the needs of industry;

Provide a platform that aims to engage the wide and diverse community of participants with pressing issues and facilitate the exploration of different perspectives;

Share best practices of design and engineering knowledge transfer between academia and industry.

We welcome contributions of: new tools, new processes, new models, new frameworks, new perceptions, new educational methods, new teaching methods, new learning methods, new assessment methods, discussion on ethics issues, discussion on societal issues, literature reviews, pedagogical considerations, or any other new, relevant research contributions.

Sub-Themes

The E&PDE 2027 conference will bring together students, researchers, professionals and industrialists from the engineering and product design sector to exchange knowledge and experience on the following sub-themes:

Learning, Teaching and Pedagogy

Methods, Tools and Design Processes

Assessment, Evaluation and Competence Development

Creativity, Innovation and Ideation

Ethics, Values and Responsibility

Culture, Context, and Inclusion

Collaboration, Industry and Societal Impact

Futures, Emerging Trends and Technologies

Student Voices (Student-led submissions)

… In Engineering and Product Design Education

In addition to the above sub-themes, we seek contributions in line with the theme of the conference for these three sub-themes:

Structural misalignment in design education: Socio-technological developments (e.g. GenAI, Social media, cheap electronics, software developments) outpace the ability of institutions to adapt their pedagogies, creating tensions between established design methods and new realities. In other cases, design education paradigms are ahead of those in the slow-changing organisational contexts in which they develop interventions. This theme explores structural misalignment between academia and other societal actors, such as companies and governmental organisations. How should we redesign design education for it to adapt to fast-changing socio-technological circumstances, and how can we persuade other societal actors to keep up with cutting-edge developments in design?

Transformative technologies in design education: Technologies such as GenAI are rapidly transforming Design engineering and education. As these technologies evolve into pedagogical actors, they challenge students and educators, forcing them to consider and explore post-human perspectives. As design tools convey a sense of being autonomous, and as the role of the designer shifts, what skills and knowledge should the next generation of designers cultivate?

“Glocalised” design education: Globalisation has resulted in situations where product design teams from one culture have to develop products for another culture. This creates a need for design education to move beyond Western perspectives to a global one that emphasises awareness of local cultures and the development of one’s own practices informed by local realities. How can design education ensure a sound design foundation that also fosters an open-mindedness and respect toward local and experiential knowledge?

We very much look forward to receiving your contributions and meeting you at the E&PDE 2027 conference.

The Changing Face of Design Education [Revisited] Design and engineering education is rapidly subject to changes in technology, geopolitics, and socio-technological domains.
